A deep passion for watches soon flourished into a thriving business run by partners Robert and Jennifer
Robert Horan, MBHI
Robert's interest in how things work started at an early age. By noon on Christmas Day he would have most of his toys disassembled, modified, reassembled and improved. Growing up he was fortunate to have a family member who was a watchmaker and Robert was intrigued with the miniature world of gears and wheels. He spent many hours as a teenager exploring watchmaking and learning all he could. Robert also had an interest in aviation, and following graduation joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Avionics and Instrument Technician. After 10 years in the Air Force Robert started a new chapter in civilian aviation, first working at a regional airline and then in the offshore helicopter sector. He developed a real interest in the regulatory side of the aviation industry and in 2000 he joined Transport Canada as an Aviation Safety Inspector, performing regulatory oversight on the 5 largest Canadian air carriers.
Since he was no longer maintaining aircraft, Robert longed for a hands-on activity, and his interest in watchmaking returned. Seeing that there was a lack of qualified watchmakers servicing the industry, Robert searched for a way to gain professional qualifications, leading him to the British Horological Institute in 2009.
Over the next 4 years Robert applied himself to gaining professional recognition and at each stage of his studies he excelled. During his studies Robert was awarded the Arthur Tremayne Memorial Prize, The British Horological Federation Prize and the Joseph Wright Memorial Prize. Robert gained a Pass with Merit and achieved the Certificate in the Repair, Restoration and Conservation of Watches and finally the much coveted Member of the British Horological Institute (MBHI), entitling him to use the post-nominals Robert Horan, MBHI. Since that time Robert has become a regular contributing author for the British Horological Institute's HJ - Horological Journal, writing watch related articles and sharing his expertise and experiences at the bench.
